Carl O’Connell, CEO With the increasing prevalence of degenerative joint diseases of the shoulder, arthroplasty is undergoing a rapid evolution, adopting new technologies and advanced methodologies for better patient outcomes. Total anatomic shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been an effective treatment for degenerative joint diseases of shoulder. Surgeons have embraced a stemless implant approach for advantages such as increased bone preservation and decreased surgical time. However, there are challenges pertaining to ease of the procedure and the extent mobility is restored. Catalyst OrthoScience, based in Naples, Florida has developed a stemless ellipsoid shaped TSA implant that is less invasive and significantly enhances the restoration of mobility.
The Catalyst CSR Total Shoulder System replicates the natural, elliptical shape of the humeral head. It offers a more tissue sparing approach and a major advantage over the spherical shape of most of the currently available anatomic TSA systems. The solution was devised by Dr. Steven Goldberg, Catalyst OrthoScience’s founder and a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and shoulder specialist.
We are building products that will significantly improve outcomes for surgeons who are conducting surgery and obviously for the benefit of patients. We believe our products offer a better approach: they are less invasive and they deliver better outcomes
“We are building products that will significantly improve outcomes for surgeon and obviously, for the benefit of patients. We believe our products are less invasive and they deliver better outcomes,” says Carl O’Connell,CEO, who brings over 30 years of experience in medical device industry and more than 25 years of experience in orthopedics, working for leading companies in the field.
In addition to CSR, Catalyst also offers an implant called the Catalyst R1 Reverse Shoulder System, used in more than 600 surgeries by 40 surgeons, to date. A complete roll-out is expected in early 2023. It has also received FDA clearance for its Catalyst3D Targeting Software that enables the surgeon to assess and plan the anatomic nature of the surgery by virtually maneuvering the components of an implant with the anatomy of the shoulder to ensure a more exact fit. Together, these products offer a comprehensive solution to patient and surgeons in the Total Shoulder market place.
Catalyst is also working to enable surgeries in an ambulatory outpatient surgical setting. Catalyst is well-suited to capitalize on this growing market trend as it offers surgeons a streamlined system delivered in one tray, and making the procedure bone-sparing and less invasive.
